Teaching philosophy
Children should be able to rebuild what they have forgotten.
Memorized procedures decay over a summer. Understanding survives — it transfers to an unfamiliar problem and holds up in a college lecture hall. That is the difference we teach toward.
Why not memorization
A child can be trained to recognize twenty problem types and reproduce the matching procedure. It works — until the twenty-first problem, or until June, or until a college course assumes the reasoning underneath rather than the recipe on top.
The alternative takes longer at the start. Every method is introduced with the question it was invented to answer. Students are asked why a step is legal before they use it, and whether an answer is plausible — a skill entirely separate from computing it.
The return on that patience shows up later. A mother described what she valued most: her sons don't just learn how to calculate. Even with problems they don't yet know how to solve, they follow a logical and coherent path toward figuring out a solution.
What a class looks like
A lesson usually opens with a problem rather than a definition. Students try it, get somewhere, get stuck — and the stuck part becomes the lesson. The teacher works at the board with the class rather than at it.
Homework is assigned every week and expected back at the next class. It isn't volume for its own sake; it's the part of the week where a child finds out on their own whether they understood. Missed classes are covered by emailed materials within 48 hours, because falling out of a year-long sequence is harder to fix than any single topic.
Why class size is a policy, not a slogan
A class doesn't run with fewer than three students, and doesn't grow past the point where a teacher can hear from everyone. In a room that size, a child who has quietly lost the thread can't stay hidden for a month. If a class doesn't reach three students, families can continue at the semi-private or private rate instead.
Confidence is a byproduct, not a goal
Confidence built on praise evaporates on the first hard problem. Confidence built on having actually solved hard problems does not. We're interested in the second kind — slower to build, considerably more durable.

We don't publish aggregate score averages or improvement statistics, because we haven't collected them in a way that would make such claims honest.
